    Welcome to the Year 1 class page!

    Welcome to the Spring Term in Year 1. The children are now well into their Year 1 routines and below, you will find out more about the exciting topics we will be covering this term.

     

    Religious Education

    Our topic this half term is ‘Galilee to Jerusalem’. The children will begin looking at how Jesus helped others on his journey from Galilee to Jerusalem. We will be exploring the town of Nazareth which was the hometown of Jesus and learning about the experiences he had there. 

    In the following half-term we will look at ‘From Lent to Easter’.  We will explore the practices during this time of Lent and the sacrifice Jesus made for us. The children will learn about the main events, characters and places in the life of Jesus: Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, Good Friday. 

     

    English

    Our first topic book is the traditional tale, The Three Little Pigs. The children will begin to look at comparing different narratives and using adjectives to describe the differences. The children will learn about the main events of the stories and start to order the key events into story maps. The Secret Sky Garden is our next focus book, and we will be using this to help promote reading for pleasure and enjoyment of reading. Next, our poetry topic will be headed by the book The Owl and The Pussycat, looking at repetition of words and rhyming. 

     

    In Spring 2 we will be looking at the classic fiction book The Owl who Was Afraid of the Dark. Using this to sequence short sentences into longer narratives. Finally, our last topic book links with our History curriculum and is all about the Great Fire of London.  Helping children to understand the different types of books; Traditional tales, Fiction and Nonfiction. 

     

    Maths

    To begin, we will explore numbers to 20. We will recognise the pattern in the teen numbers, represent and compare the numbers, giving us a real understanding of each number. We will identify the numbers on a number line, order the numbers and identify 1 more/less. The children will then look at addition and subtraction within 20. They will learn and recognise their number bonds to and within 20 and find doubles. They will identify the related facts of addition and subtraction to 20 and find missing number problems.

    In spring 2, the children will explore numbers to 50. They will gain an understanding of tens and ones and be able to partition numbers. They will find and use number lines to support them and identify 1 more/less. After this, the children will learn about length and height and begin to measure things using centimetres. Mass and volume will also be explored. The children will measure and compare mass and capacity.

     

    Assemblies

    The children take part in weekly hymn singing and achievement assemblies and this term, the children will take part in a class assembly.

     

    Expectations

    As is the case throughout school, we expect and encourage all children to adhere to high standards of behaviour both in class and in the playground. The children will continue to follow their Golden Rules with the understanding that doing so will create a happy learning environment that will help their learning.

    Working together with parents and guardians plays a big part in establishing good relationships and standards of behaviour.

     

    General Reminders

    • Book bags will go home every day and return to school every day.
    • Reading scheme books will be handed out every Friday (due back Monday) and every Tuesday (due back Thursday).
    • Homework will be set on the following days:

    Spellings – sent home on Fridays and tested the following Friday (books are due back the following Thursday)

    English and Maths – these will be short activities sent out throughout the week to ensure work is manageable for both children and parents. It is important that you support your children at home and have an understanding of the curriculum being taught. This homework will be sent out every Friday and due in on the Thursday of the next week.

    • RE is sent home on Fridays and is due back in on a Monday
    • Topic - please look out for other homework that may include research for Science or our Geography and History topics; dates will be displayed on the sheet.
    • PE takes place every Thursday. Please ensure that your child is dressed in a full PE kit in school on this day. All items of uniform must also be named.
    • Please ensure that your child brings in a named bottle of water every day. These need to be taken home and washed daily.
